A New Technology That Interested Me
I have been trying to find new technologies in everyday life that not only are new to me but interest me as well. Being lucky enough to travel during school time I wanted to try and find some technology that was of interest to me. Traveling out of the country to Mexico I wasn’t sure what I would come across. Staying at a nicer resort I was afraid that I wouldn’t find anything out of the norm. This concern was address almost right away. The resort that I was staying at required me to wear a wristband in order to eat at the all-inclusive restaurants. The new technology was within the wristband. In the wristband was also the room key. The wristband had technology that I would put it next to the door, like a proximity reader, to my room and it would unlock it. This is something that I have never seen before.
As I think about different room keys I can remember back to a child when you would check into a hotel room you would get an actual metal key with a key ring attached usually with the room number in the keychain. Technology increased the most current and most popular key and that is the credit card type of room key. The front desk of the hotel can program it as you check in and you slide it in the door lock compartment which unlocks the door. This same type of key can be used in a proximity reader, where you just hold the card close to the door and it unlocks it.
This new technology of being able to put a key or something like a key to unlock a door into a small wristband is a huge change in my opinion. I am not sure the cost but I am sure it was higher because the wristband cannot be reused. The wristband is cut off when you checkout. The wristband also had a number code on it so that it could be looked up simply to see what room it was meant to use.
This new technology has only been around for about a two years from what I could find doing research. The RFID technology seems to be catching on rather quickly in the resort like destinations. These links provided will go into a little more detail about this new technology.
As I look for more technologies it always amazes me what is out there and what I just don’t know about. My search for new technology that interests me will continue. Until the next one…….

ReplyDeleteI Love new technology, but this is one that has always bothered me a little bit. I have heard the information from these devices can be easily stolen and then duplicated by someone just standing next to you in an elevator. I don't know if that is exactly true but it is concerning. With this in mind...when I am on travel I always use the room safe and deadbolt. I have always felt a little better about having a steel key in my hand than a plastic card. Thanks for the info.
I love the simplicity of the idea, no key card to keep track of while in the swimming pool or getting locked out while grabbing some ice!!! Yay! Technology is advancing so quickly it is hard to keep up with it all, so many great minds out there making a difference. But I can not help but agree with Steve about the security side of it, but I am sure the developers thought of that before hand. So besides the concern of safety all you have to worry about now is the tan line from you bracelet :)
